Re: Slack alternatives?

Good question, I probably should have included some of the options being discussed elsewhere.
IRC is one. It has been around for a very long time, and there are many different clients available for it. It does not have anything built in for being able to get back history if you do not stay connected, but there are a lot of ways to capture that history. There are also bots and various tooling built around IRC that can add a lot of automation and additional functionality since it has been in use for so long. But one big issue I've heard is it is not always accessible through some corporate firewalls, and I believe folks in China may have trouble sometimes as well.
Gitter (https://gitter.im/) is one I do not have any experience with, but I have heard some good things about so far. It seems to be one platform on the rise.
Rocket (https://rocket.chat/) is another one that is commonly brought up as an alternative to Slack. But again, I don't have much experience with it, so I can't really comment too much on its pros and cons.
